Cafe de la Nouvelle Mairie
Otherwise known to us in the food & wine industry as “Chez Benjamin” – the charming Café de la Nouvelle Marie is a quintessential Parisian café & wine bar complete with jazz music, great coffee, superb refined comfort food & a fantastic natural wine list.
Just a stone’s throw from the Pantheon & facing Universal Records, Benjamin Fourty and his partner Corentin Bucillat have kept the café tradition going on this hip Latin Quarter corner, where music industry folks, the Sorbonne intellectual set, professionals, wine makers and locals come for coffee or glass at the counter or table any hour of the day.
It has everything one thinks of in a Parisian cafe – weathered tables, mosaic floors, zinc bar, whirring coffee machine, jazz music and servers yelling out orders to the bar & kitchen, “One foie gras! Three eggs-mayo! A carafe of Beaujolais and one café s’il vous plait!”
The guys are huge natural wine advocates so the list is lengthy and interesting – and the kitchen is using exceptional products to cook seasonal refined comfort food paired with crusty Thierry Breton loaves such as starters of ice cold oysters, country terrines, eggs-mayo, duck foie gras, white wine mussels, smoked mozzarella & eggplant caviar, roasted piquillo peppers stuffed with fresh goat cheese – and entrees of grilled lamb sausage on lentils with heirloom carrots, grilled cod on white beans & chorizo, seared steak and baby potatoes, and spinach-ricotta torte.
The Café de la Nouvelle Marie is a must – as is the people watching (and star-spotting) from the terrace.
A la carte menu: 6 – 25€. Wines by the glass, carafe or bottle.
